Autonomous agents — AI-driven programs capable of thinking and transacting without human involvement — could open the door to a new era of e-commerce on Ethereum, thanks to a long-overlooked HTTP web standard that is only now starting to see use on the blockchain.
The HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code — introduced roughly 30 years ago but rarely implemented — combined with Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3009, allows AI agents to process stablecoin payments automatically, without human input, the Ethereum Foundation noted on Wednesday. The insight came via a “guest thread” authored by Coinbase developers Kevin Leffew and Lincoln Murr.
According to the pair, autonomous agents could ultimately become Ethereum’s “biggest power users.” Coinbase has already adopted HTTP 402 through its “x402 payments protocol,” as detailed on its GitHub repository.

The change could be groundbreaking, as AI agents can now independently access funds to pay for services, eliminating the need for human involvement in handling API calls, storage, or computation.
According to the pair, this capability could power use cases ranging from self-driving taxis that pay for their own expenses, to AI models generating on-demand content, and applications that automatically use stablecoins to permanently store data.

AI agents are already engaging in crypto trading on a limited scale, analyzing market data, executing buy and sell orders, and optimizing portfolios in real time — all without human involvement.
As straightforward as using a vending machine
Leffew and Murr likened the process to a vending machine, where an AI agent receives an HTTP 402 request, signs a transaction, and sends the payment to receive the response.
In essence, they said, it transforms the API into a wallet-aware service.
“One round trip. Like a vending machine. No accounts required.”
Ethereum Is the Ideal Match for HTTP 402
Leffew and Murr said Ethereum’s trustless settlement layer makes it the perfect blockchain for implementing HTTP 402, as it streamlines invoicing and dispute chargebacks compared to traditional systems.
“They need atomic payments, programmable policies, and composable wallets. Ethereum and stablecoins give them exactly that.”
AI Agents Already Operating Through HTTP 402 and EIP 3009
Developers are already testing HTTP 402, the Coinbase team noted, citing Hyperbolic Labs’ integration of the protocol into its large language model and Prodia Labs’ use of it to generate images and video content.
“The real magic of x402 isn’t just that agents can make payments,” Leffew and Murr concluded, “but that they can autonomously chain services together into complete economic loops.”
