Coinbase has made a strategic investment in CoinDCX, India’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, underscoring its commitment to the rapidly expanding South Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
According to an Oct. 15 blog post, this investment builds on Coinbase Ventures’ prior participation in CoinDCX’s funding rounds, including its $2 billion Series D valuation in 2022. The latest deal is intended to deepen Coinbase’s footprint in regions with over 100 million crypto users.
Expanding in South Asia
CoinDCX, with more than 20 million users, has become one of India’s leading crypto exchanges by emphasizing innovation, regulatory compliance, and trust. As of July 2025, the platform reported ₹13.7 lakh crore ($165 billion) in transaction volume, ₹10,000 crore ($1.2 billion) in assets under custody, and ₹1,179 crore ($141 million) in annualized revenue.
This year, CoinDCX also expanded into the Middle East, meeting growing demand for compliant, retail-friendly digital asset platforms.
Proven resilience enhances appeal
In July 2025, CoinDCX faced an internal account breach that led to a $44 million loss. Importantly, no customer funds were affected. The platform quickly restored operations using its reserves, reinforcing its operational resilience and credibility.
CEO Sumit Gupta emphasized that the company remains profitable and committed to long-term growth. This swift recovery likely reinforced Coinbase’s confidence in CoinDCX’s governance and fundamentals.
Positioning for a regulated future
The investment comes at a time when India’s crypto sector is moving closer to formal regulation and attracting institutional interest. Coinbase highlighted that the partnership aims to make crypto “more accessible, useful, and trusted” across the region.
The move aligns with Coinbase’s 2025 expansion strategy, which includes ventures in Web3, AI-driven finance, and acquisitions like Deribit for derivatives. To date, Coinbase has invested over $250 million in India, supporting Web3 infrastructure projects and regional startups, including CoinSwitch Kuber.
