Veteran Nigerian entertainer and social activist Charly Boy has opened up about his relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing their connection as a rare friendship grounded in mutual respect and honest dialogue about Nigeria’s future.
In a post shared on X, the outspoken performer said many Nigerians were surprised by his closeness to the former head of state, especially given his long-standing reputation as a vocal critic of government policies and authority figures.
According to him, relationships are often misunderstood when viewed solely through public personas, noting that respect and understanding can create unexpected bonds between people with differing views.
Charly Boy explained that Obasanjo sees beyond his controversial image and acknowledges traits he believes define him, including courage, consistency and a commitment to speaking the truth regardless of the consequences.
He added that he equally views the former president beyond his military past and political status, describing him as an elder who has endured the pressures of war, governance and national leadership while remaining resilient.
The entertainer revealed that their interactions frequently involve discussions about Nigeria’s challenges, marked by strong debates and differing opinions, but always conducted with mutual respect.
He also recalled that their friendship became publicly evident when Obasanjo personally hosted the launch of his autobiography, 999, an occasion he described as a defining moment in his career.
According to Charly Boy, the event symbolised recognition rather than commercial success, adding that their relationship demonstrates how dialogue and respect can help bridge divisions in society.
