India has successfully reached its target of 20% ethanol blending with petrol five years ahead of schedule, marking significant economic and environmental progress. This initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure dramatically increased ethanol production, saved substantial foreign exchange, and bolstered rural prosperity through the sugar industry.
India’s energy sector marked a historic milestone, achieving a 20% ethanol blend with petrol ahead of its 2030 target, according to a recent statement by the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA).
The initiative, which began in 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saw ethanol production soar from 38 crore litres to 661 crore litres by June 2025, bringing substantial economic gains and a reduction in carbon emissions.
ISMA data highlights the program’s financial impact, with the agricultural sector benefiting through increased earnings for farmers and distilleries, while also delivering foreign exchange savings of Rs 1.36 lakh crore. Director General Deepak Ballani hailed it as a leap toward energy independence, underpinned by strong government policies and the sugar industry’s pivotal role in ethanol supply.
