Multnomah County is hard at work upgrading and maintaining two of the bridges that cross the Willamette River in downtown Portland. This weekend’s work will cause upcoming traffic delays.
The Morrison Bridge will have multiple lifts 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 as crews install a new motor that powers the drawbridge. Lifts will last about 20 minutes.
If the Morrison is your regular Saturday crossing, you may want to choose an alternate like the Hawthorne or Burnside bridges.
The work is part of the Morrison Bridge Strengthening Project that will add titanium rebar to strengthen the Southeast Morrison and Belmont street approach ramps on the east side of the bridge. The goal is to remove the weight restrictions that prevent heavy trucks from using the bridge and keep it safe for modern freight trucks and other vehicles to cross. More bridge lifts are planned for early next week:
Hawthorne Bridge – Electrical and mechanical inspections will require frequent lifts Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 23-24. Lifts may last 15-20 minutes throughout the day.
Morrison Bridge – Electrical and mechanical inspections will require frequent lifts Wednesday and Thursday Feb. 25-26. Lifts may last 15-20 minutes throughout the day.
Travelers should expect delays and plan to use alternate crossings.
