Smoke could be seen from miles away in one area of Merseyside this evening after a fire broke out. People living in Billinge started sharing pictures and video on social media of black smoke just after 5pm this evening.
One woman living nearby who had footage of the fire told the ECHO: “From my house overlooking the field on video, it must have been big to have seen all the black smoke. I heard it was a field on fire, but don’t know for fact. The farmers are busy out now cropping the fields.”
Another woman on a local Facebook group said: “Just seen this very black smoke coming from Carr Mill Road area and can hear sirens in the distance, hope everyone is okay.” A fellow resident reported: “Field on fire at Carr Mill Road.”
When contacted by the ECHO, a spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) confirmed fire crew had been to an incident on Garswood Road, which runs adjacent to Carr Mill Road.
Crews were alerted at 5.17pm and at the scene nine minutes later with three fire engines attending. They found a large quantity of tyres, approximately 10 metres by four metres, involved in fire.
Firefighters used one hose reel jet and compressed air foam systems to extinguish the fire.
One individual, conscious and breathing, was treated at the scene for partial wrist burns. MFRS crews advised the casualty to present at a walk-in centre if required.
Fire fighters checked to see if the fire had spread before leaving the scene at 6.20pm.
