WE’RE approaching the tailend of our job interview series. Now, towards the end of the interview, expect them to ask, “So, why should we hire you?” Keep it short and sweet. Highlight your unique value proposition. Something that makes you stand out from the rest. Sell yourself. But don’t overdo it. Focus on and highlight your key strengths relative to the role. Badly put, you can’t say you sing well when you’re applying to become a cook, can you? Well, except if you’re applying in The Singing Cooks and Waiters which is, believe it or not, still going strong to this day. I will leave you with this funny story I was reminded of while writing this. Melai Cantiveros who ended up as PBB Double Up’s big winner in 2010, was chosen from among the thousands or probably even millions of hopefuls when she was auditioning to become one of the housemates by standing out with her answer. The question was what business would the aspirant put up if he or she becomes the season’s big winner. As she noticed most of her peers were saying the usual and serious answers like sari-sari store or convenience store, she was smart enough to change it up and wow the judges. And wow them she did. Her answer? A vulcanizing shop.
