According to CNN, the interview comes as House Republicans intensify their probe into Biden’s fitness for office, continuing their longstanding concerns about what Biden’s condition might mean for the administration and whether his administration attempted to hide concerns about his cognitive abilities. Reed is the latest in a series of former Biden White House officials to face questioning from the Republican-led panel, which has been conducting interviews with varying degrees of cooperation from former administration members.
Reed’s appearance is particularly significant because he played a direct role in preparing Biden for his presidential debate against Donald Trump, an event that proved to be a turning point in Biden’s political career. The debate performance was widely regarded as disastrous for Biden, with observers noting his incoherent mumbling and struggle to prove his mental facilities, which ultimately contributed to his decision to exit the presidential race altogether. House Republicans are expected to focus heavily on Reed’s involvement in debate preparation and what he may have observed about Biden’s condition during that process.
The House Oversight Committee has scheduled former senior adviser to the president for communications Anita Dunn to appear on Thursday, marking the second high-profile Biden aide to face questioning this week. The committee is expected to conduct additional voluntary interviews in the coming weeks as Republicans continue their investigation into the former president’s mental acuity and potential cover-up efforts.
Recent interviews have produced mixed results for House Republicans conducting the probe. Former Biden counselor Steve Ricchetti and onetime senior adviser Mike Donilon voluntarily participated in transcribed interviews last week, cooperating with the committee’s requests. However, other former officials have been less forthcoming, with some requiring subpoenas to compel their appearance before the panel.
The investigation has encountered significant resistance from several key figures who were compelled to testify. White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor, former assistant to the president and senior adviser to the first lady, Anthony Bernal, and former assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini all invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when questioned by the committee. Their refusal to answer questions has raised additional concerns among Republican investigators about potential wrongdoing within the Biden administration regarding the handling of information about the former president’s cognitive state.
