A shared vision for prosperity: Individual responsibility and national support in Oman

Oman, our beloved nation, is on a continuous journey of growth and development, guided by our dedicated leaders. This progress, aligned with Oman Vision 2040, prioritises Comprehensive Human Development — building a strong, resilient society through the security and welfare of its citizens.

While the government, under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, is tirelessly striving to achieve the best for its people, national prosperity is fundamentally a partnership. It is crucial that we, as individuals, meet these efforts with our own commitment to responsible living, ensuring a stronger, more stable future for our Sultanate.

A foundation of self-reliance

For the nation to flourish, individuals must first take charge of their own stability. This begins with personal responsibility and informed decision-making.

Mastering personal finance

One of the most immediate and impactful areas where we can help ourselves is in managing personal finances. A mindful approach to spending not only secures our personal future but also strengthens the broader national economy.

Practice budgeting

Know exactly what you earn and where every rial is spent.

Prioritise needs over wants

Clearly distinguish between essential expenditures and discretionary purchases.

Avoid unnecessary debt

Taking loans for non-essential activities or those that do not generate income is a major pitfall that can lead to significant financial strain.

Caution and care in business ventures.

The government’s support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is a valuable engine for diversification and job creation. This opportunity, however, requires careful planning and execution.

Learn the basics

Take the time to truly learn how business works, from market analysis and financial planning to operational management.

Pace yourself

Avoid expanding too fast, investing too heavily, or taking on too much debt before the enterprise has had time to stabilise and generate reliable income.

Seek mentorship

Utilise available resources and seek guidance from established business owners.

Rushing into business unprepared often leads to unfortunate outcomes. Success is a marathon, not a sprint; it requires careful preparation and patience. Let’s help ourselves before we complain.

Strengthening the social safety net

To fully support its citizens, especially the most vulnerable, the nation prioritizes an effective and comprehensive social safety net, alleviating economic pressure and enhancing the quality of life for low-income families and youth.

Targeted financial support & social security

A resilient safety net must ensure financial aid keeps pace with living costs and targets those most in need.

Social security review

Existing social security allowances (for widows, orphans, persons with disabilities) should be regularly reviewed and inflation-adjusted to provide a sufficient basic income floor.

Targeted cash transfers

Direct cash transfers for old age and children should be strictly limited to lower-income nationals only to maximise relief for the most vulnerable.

Youth employment and training allowances

Addressing youth unemployment through structured support and incentives.

Unemployment allowance

Provide a temporary allowance for unemployed youth, with the condition that it is suspended if the recipient refuses up to three job offers, encouraging active job seeking.

Training allowance

Provide an allowance for all youth undergoing job training in both the private and government sectors.

Subsidies for esssential services

Reducing the burden of living costs for the needy.

Essential utilities

Waive or heavily subsidise basic utilities (electricity and water) for lower-income nationals, including those under social security. A reasonable consumption limit must be implemented to ensure relief covers basic needs while promoting sustainability.

Healthcare fees

Waive certain hospital fees or taxes for low-income nationals.

Social housing for low-income nationals

Secure and affordable housing is fundamental to social stability. Dedicated and accelerated efforts are required to provide accessible social housing programs for lower-income nationals to build strong, stable communities.

A call for collective commitment

Oman’s progress is undeniable. As our leaders continue to strive for national betterment through strategic support and essential safety nets, let us, the citizens, meet their efforts with our own commitment to responsible living. By embracing responsibility, managing our resources wisely, appreciating the foundation we have, and holding an honest, responsible team accountable for implementation, we collectively ensure a stronger, more stable, and more prosperous future for our beloved Oman.
