Rama Duwaji, New York City’s incoming first lady, is openly discussing the difficulties of sudden public attention after her husband Zohran Mamdani’s political rise. In a New York Magazine profile, the 28-year-old illustrator stated that she does not want to be defined only as “Zohran Mamdani’s wife” and intends to continue her art career following his January inauguration.

New York City’s incoming first lady, Rama Duwaji, is speaking openly about the personal challenges that have come with her husband Zohran Mamdani’s rise to political prominence and how she intends to move through public life without sacrificing her professional identity.

In a latest profile published by New York Magazine, the 28-year-old illustrator showed frustration over being broadly termed as “Zohran Mamdani’s wife” rather than being regarded for her artistic accomplishments. As she is getting ready to step into her new role after Mamdani’s inauguration on January 1, Duwaji made it clear that she has no plan of stepping away from her creative career.

“I’m definitely not stopping that. Come January, it’s something that I want to continue to do,” she stated.

Duwaji, who intentionally avoided media interviews during her husband’s mayoral campaign, highlighted that she does not view herself as a political personality. Instead, she wishes to use the visibility that comes with her new role to uplift others in the creative community.

“At the end of the day, I’m not a politician. I’m here to be a support system for Z and to use the role in the best way that I can as an artist,” she mentioned in the wide-ranging interview.

She further explained that spotlighting overlooked creatives would be central to her mission.

“There are so many artists trying to make it in the city so many talented, undiscovered artists making the work with no instant validation, using their last paycheck on material,” Duwaji cited.

“I think using this position to highlight them and give them a platform is a top priority.”

The artist also discussed candidly about the emotional challenge of suddenly being thrust into the spotlight as Mamdani’s fame surged. She described that it took time to accept that her husband’s political path had become a shared experience.

“I realized that it was not just his thing but our thing,” Duwaji stated.

While she mentioned that she wasn’t offended by the attention itself, she acknowledged struggling with how rapidly her personal identity appeared to be reduced.

“I wasn’t necessarily offended, but it was more the perception of being seen as someone’s wife. I was spiraling about how, that night, the first article to come out was like, ‘Who Is Zohran Mamdani’s Wife?’ Blah, blah, blah, blah.

“And I was so upset because that one article showed up when you searched my name and not an interview I did on my art, or my work, or the things that I’ve done and the achievements that I’ve had as an artist,” she cited. “And now there’s, like, a bajillion of them.”

Despite her mixed feelings about popularity, the profile cited that Duwaji has amassed a devoted following on TikTok and other digital platforms. Her signature black turtleneck and pixie haircut were even termed “fall’s new ‘cool girl’ look” by Vogue.

The New York Magazine reporter told Duwaji that women have been requesting hairstylists for “the Rama,” referencing a growing social-media trend.

“I didn’t know if that was a real thing,” Duwaji cited.

In a lighter moment, Duwaji showed a personal icebreaker she frequently uses asking people which type of fruit they identify with. While she once explained herself as a raspberry as they are “sweet and tart,” she stated that the pressures of the campaign and public spotlight have transformed her perspective.

She currently compares herself to a lychee, describing that it has a “slightly hardened shell but still open and soft on the inside.”
