Police in Zanzibar are reportedly questioning crypto trader and Asymmetric fund founder Joe McCann after the death of his fiancée during their vacation.
His fiancée, Ashly Robinson, 31, died in hospital on April 9 after being found the previous day by staff at the hotel where the couple was staying, according to reports citing Tanzanian police.
Authorities have classified Robinson’s death as a suicide but said McCann remains under questioning. Police are also holding his passport pending the results of an autopsy.
According to investigators, hotel staff said the couple had a “misunderstanding” and had been staying in separate rooms, with McCann moved prior to the incident.

A hotel staff member later found Robinson unresponsive in her room with a belt around her neck and alerted management. She was taken to hospital, where she later died.
Her family has challenged that account, with her sister, Alyssa Endres, telling NBC News that “none of this makes sense,” adding that Robinson had been in high spirits after celebrating her birthday and recent engagement to McCann just days earlier.
McCann is the founder of crypto venture and hedge fund Asymmetric, which revised its trading strategy in July following investor backlash over underperformance during a prolonged period of market volatility.
Plans to take a Solana treasury company—set to be led by McCann—public through a merger were reportedly scrapped in August for undisclosed reasons. The development came weeks after he said the fund had lost around 80% of its value earlier in the year.
