Tucker Carlson is refusing to apologize after he interviewed white nationalist Nick Fuentes on his show. The former Fox News host says he has no regrets about talking to Fuentes, even though many people criticized him for it.
Carlson recently went on Megyn Kelly’s SiriusXM show to talk about the situation. When Kelly asked him about the backlash, he had a blunt message for anyone who didn’t like how he handled the interview.
“You know, do your own interview the way that you want to do it. You’re not my editor. Buzz off,” Carlson said, according to The Hill. He even told critics that if they wanted to yell at Fuentes themselves, he would give them his phone number.
This isn’t the first time Carlson has dealt with criticism over who he interviews. He said the reaction to his Fuentes talk reminded him of what happened after he interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this year. A lot of people weren’t happy about that interview either, but Carlson says he doesn’t let the negative comments bother him.
Carlson explained that he only cares about what a few people think of him. “I care about what my wife thinks, my children think, and God thinks. And that’s it. I don’t need to prove that I am a good person to you,” he said during his talk with Kelly.
He added that critics are free to think whatever they want about him. “You may think I’m a terrible person. OK, I’m just doing my thing, which is, I want to understand what people think,” Carlson said. “And I’m committed to that. And if you don’t like it, don’t watch. That’s my view.”
The Fuentes interview has caused problems even among conservative groups. The Heritage Foundation, a well-known conservative organization, got caught up in the drama when its president Kevin Roberts first supported Carlson’s decision to do the interview.
But Roberts later said he was sorry and made it clear that his group doesn’t agree with Fuentes or what he believes. This created more negative headlines for the organization.
Since Carlson left Fox News, he’s been running his own media company and doing his show online. He’s talked to several guests who have caused controversy, and it seems like he plans to keep doing things his way. Carlson is still popular with President Trump and remains an important voice in conservative media, even when his interviews create debates.
