Since the Amarillo Tribune began publishing in June of last year, we have received hundreds of thoughtful questions from readers about how we operate and what we stand for. As Amarillo’s first 501(c)(3) nonprofit newsroom, our presence introduces a new model for local journalism; one that is grounded in public service and community trust.
Each day, we work to earn that trust. At the core of our newsroom is a mission to serve our community by providing local, ethical, in-depth and always free news for all of Amarillo.
For this month’s Behind the Headlines event, titled What Even Is Journalism?, we chose to take a step back and introduce ourselves, explain our mission, and offer insight into how we do our work. We are proud to make the recording of this event, like all of our news coverage, freely available on our website for everyone in the community. We are also deeply grateful to our sponsors for helping to make Behind the Headlines: What Even Is Journalism? a reality.
Along with our staff and board of directors, I hope that by inviting you inside our newsroom and clearly outlining our editorial processes and policies, we can not only answer your questions but also build a deeper foundation of transparency and invite accountability. We want our readers to understand what we stand for and to hold us to those standards.
As a nonprofit organization, the Amarillo Tribune belongs to the community. It belongs to all of us. Whether you read our daily newsletter, share our stories, or donate to us, your participation with the Amarillo Tribune makes local journalism possible. Because of that, your voice, your feedback, and your values are essential to shaping what we cover. We are here to work for you by reporting on the stories that matter most to you and following up until all of your questions are answered.
Thanks to you, the Amarillo Tribune continues to serve our community by providing trustworthy information, holding power accountable, fostering informed conversations, and focusing on all the details that affect our everyday lives.
Please get in touch-you can text, call or email your questions, concerns or story ideas. We’re here for you. Thank you for being part of this work.

The Amarillo Tribune is our community’s first non-profit, community-funded digital news organization. Our donors and board members believe that local news is a pillar of our democracy and, as community members, might advocate for other causes and be mentioned in our coverage. Our donors and board members do not have editorial oversight; all editorial decisions are made by the Amarillo Tribune journalists alone.
