The young man from Texas capturing hearts across America since being made an honorary U.S. Secret Service member by President Trump recently became an honorary deputy with the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Tim Chilton was in Richmond Tuesday for the swearing-in of Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel into multiple other law enforcement agencies as well, including the Virginia State Police.
The 13-year-old who loves law enforcement is battling brain cancer and it’s his wish to gain associations and badges from as many agencies as possible, from across the country. DJ has been granted nearly 3,000 badges so far, from an adoring public.
Chilton said it was an honor to meet DJ and his father.
“The pride they both have of one another is overwhelming. Certainly, people could learn a thing or two from this young warrior!” said the Culpeper sheriff.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares were there Tuesday at the State Capital to witness DJ receive more credentials — as an Honorary State Trooper, Correctional Officer, Probation and Parole Officer, Petersburg Officer and Henrico County Firefighter.
“A true American,” said Miyares in remarks. “Thank you, DJ for inspiring all of us,” he said, noting the young man’s extraordinary strength and exemplary courage in overcoming life’s challenges.
DJ and his father, Theodis, have traveled all over the U.S. fulfilling the youth’s goal of being sworn in by 1,000 law enforcement agencies — a goal far surpassed and ever-growing, according to a release from the governor’s office.

“It is a great honor to welcome DJ Daniel as the newest member of these Virginia law enforcement agencies. DJ’s fight represents a symbol of hope and determination for the Commonwealth,” said Youngkin in a statement. “I am proud of the leadership that these law enforcement agencies uphold and proud to have DJ join them.”
At his young age, DJ has shown more bravery and spirit than most do in a lifetime, Miyares stated.
“As the top law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is an immense privilege and honor to welcome DJ into our law enforcement family — one united by a shared calling to protect and serve. Virginia is in your corner, DJ,” Miyares said.
Folks working in public safety have some bad days, the attorney general said.
“But then you have moments like this — extraordinary,” Miyares said. (It makes you) feel good about our life and the future and what this country is.”
Frederick County Sheriff Lenny Millholland, who helped organize the gathering, said DJ and his father are wonderful people.
“For all that this young man has been through, you have to admire his outlook on life and the love DJ has for law enforcement and those who put on the badge,” said Millholland, immediate past president of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association. “He is an inspiration to so many. We love him. I am glad we are able to make his dream come true.”
DJ and his dad also recently traveled to Kentucky to be sworn in by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
The young man has surpassed his goal, but his energy and passion show no signs of slowing down, according to a post from Shelby County Sheriff Mark Moore: “Sheriffs across the nation celebrate Deputy DJ Daniel.”
