This happened during the big celebration at Dodger Stadium; Yoshinobu Yamamoto took the microphone and, with a smile, said a few words in Spanish that unleashed euphoria among those present.
The gesture was widely celebrated by fans, as it is interpreted as a clear sign of the Japanese star’s intentions to connect with the diverse Los Angeles fan base, especially with the Latino community.
Yamamoto, who signed a historic 12-year, $325 million contract, has become a key figure within the team. In Game 2 of the World Series against the Blue Jays, he pitched a gem, allowing only one run and four hits, cementing his status as one of the best pitchers in MLB. However, his effort to learn Spanish was what stole the hearts of the public.
According to his agent Joel Wolfe, Yamamoto has worked hard to improve his English, but has also shown interest in learning Spanish to better communicate with his teammates and fans.
His interpreter, Yoshihiro Sonoda, has been instrumental in this adaptation process, helping him not only with the language, but also with his integration into American and Latin culture.
At a time when starters are throwing fewer and fewer innings, Yoshinobu Yamamoto has become a total exception. The Japanese ace has set a precedent by becoming the first pitcher since Madison Bumgarner in 2014 to record two complete games in the same postseason.
