Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School: Year 1 student taken to Bunbury hospital after suspected snake biteWill CorbettSouth Western TimesWed, 26 November 2025 12:05PM

A year 1 student at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School has been taken to hospital for a suspected snake bite on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred on the school playground during lunchtime, with the school nurse and ambulance called immediately.

According to a statement issued by the school, the student has been discharged with hospital staff confirming no venom was detected.

School principal Matthew O’Brien said it was to his knowledge the first suspected snake bite on school grounds.

“I want to commend the staff and students who were present, along with the rapid and professional response of our school nurse and the St John Ambulance service,” he said.

“The duty teacher provided first aid on site, and the nurse arrived promptly with a snake bite kit. The student’s condition was carefully monitored, and he was transported by St John’s ambulance to hospital with the school nurse, as is standard procedure for a snake bite assessment.

“The safety of our students remains our highest priority, and each member of staff is first-aid trained, including in the treatment of snake bites.

“We are fortunate to be located in a beautiful natural bush setting, and with that comes a responsibility we take seriously.

“Our grounds staff are fully trained in the safe removal and relocation of wildlife, and we regularly manage our bushland areas for safety, including seasonal mitigation work.

“If snakes are ever observed on campus, all staff are notified immediately and signage is placed at the location of the sighting in line with practices used by local shires and the City of Bunbury.”

On Wednesday morning, students had “age-appropriate discussions” around snakes, and were reminded of the course of action if they see a snake and what to do if they think another student has been bitten.
