The Kansas City Chiefs will not have wide receiver Xavier Worthy on the field for the Week 2 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he may be back sooner rather than later.
Worthy suffered a shoulder injury in the Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and didn’t even get through the first offensive series of the season before exiting. The injury was a result of friendly fire from tight end Travis Kelce.
While we all feared the worst for Worthy, he was able to avoid a season-ending injury for now and, in what is a great sign for his availability after Week 2, he was able to turn in two limited practices during the week before being ruled out.
Here’s what we know about his return timeline.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that Worthy is looking to play in Week 3 versus the New York Giants. Rapoport adds that if Worthy does play, he will do so with a harness to protect his “fully torn labrum.”
“My understanding is Worthy is looking good to play [in Week 3],” Rapoport said. “And if he does so, he will do it with a fully torn labrum and a harness. It sounds crazy, but it is something that several NFL players do.”
So, the tidbit about Worthy having a fully torn labrum is new information. Initially, reports suggested he only had a dislocated shoulder and there was no talk of a torn labrum, which is often a result of such a shoulder injury.
Whatever the case may be, the risk of re-injury is going to be very high for Worthy over the rest of the season. And, the injury is going to make catching the football, blocking and taking hits in general much more difficult.
For now, the Chiefs will have to once again lean heavily on Marquise Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton. Of course, Kansas City will also need more out of tight end Travis Kelce.
