World-class motor tech you didn’t know were Aussie

Australia’s reputation for ingenuity in motoring is stuff of legends.

The first coupe ute was invented by Ford Australia’s young designer Lewis Bandt in 1933 in response to a letter sent by Victorian farmer’s wife asking the company to make a “vehicle that we can use to go to church on Sunday, without getting wet, and that my husband can use to take the pigs to market on Monday?”.

Bandt created a two-door body with a rear tray from the Ford Model A chassis, naming it the “coupe utility”.

The ingenious solution, born from a simple, practical request, perfectly illustrates the defining characteristic of Australian innovation.

And this same ingenuity underpins Australia’s strong history of manufacturing vehicles such the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon.

But that spirit doesn’t just stop at building cars – it also extends to the components that keep drivers safe, let them drive faster, handle better, and stay cooler.

As a result, Aussie-made products are quietly powering some of the most advanced vehicles on the planet.

As part of News Australia’s Back Australia campaign, here are a few examples of Australia’s DNA pushing the boundaries in the automotive industry worldwide.

Carbon Revolution

Carbon Revolution is a world leader in lightweight wheels based out of Victoria.

It’s the first company to successfully develop and manufacture one-piece carbon-fibre automotive wheels.

While most wheels are made from aluminium or steel, Carbon Revolution’s one-piece carbon-fibre wheels are up to 40-50 per cent lighter.

That dramatic drop in unsprung mass enhances driving dynamics, resulting in better handling, faster acceleration and improved fuel economy.

And as a result, brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ford and Rolls-Royce have since adopted Carbon Revolution for its wheels.

The company’s latest collaboration is with the new Lamborghini Temerario, the upcoming Lamborghini successor to the Huracán.

PWR

Queensland-based PWR Advanced Cooling Technology is a global heavyweight in high-performance cooling technology.

Its products are precision engineered with cutting-edge manufacturing to deliver lightweight, super efficient cooling systems.

These radiators, intercoolers, and oil coolers are essential components, widely used in major motor racing series including Formula One, NASCAR, and the World Rally Championship.

It designs, tests and builds everything in-house, allowing the company flexibility to meet the extreme demands of motorsport and aerospace customers.

Red Bull Racing’s Formula One team is one of many that use PWR cooling technology.

For over 10 years, PWR has been a core player in helping the team achieve Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championship titles.

ARB and TJM

Australia has built an impressive off-road adventuring culture, fuelled by brands such as ARB and TJM, and it’s no surprise these world-leading companies sit at the forefront of four-wheel-drive and adventure accessories.

Founded in the 1970s out of backyard ingenuity, these brands now supply 4WD accessories to adventurers across the globe.

Melbourne-based ARB, and Brisbane-based TJM have built empires on bull bars, suspension systems, roof racks and recovery gear for the most challenging terrains.

Their products aren’t only used by four-wheel-drive enthusiasts; they’re also relied upon by mining fleets, defence forces and global expedition teams.

Seeing Machines

Canberra-based Seeing Machines has developed sophisticated AI-driven hardware and software used by major carmakers worldwide.

The company specialises in driver-attention technology that can detect, in real time, when drivers are fatigued or distracted.

The technology is already integrated into vehicles from BMW, General Motors, Ford and Mercedes-Benz, as well as commercial fleets and aviation systems.

Using camera-based sensors and advanced algorithms, Seeing Machines can tell if a driver’s eyes are off the road or if fatigue is setting in, helping prevent incidents before they occur.

With global regulations pushing for mandatory driver monitoring in new vehicles, Seeing Machines is dominating a booming market.

It’s smart, lifesaving technology being used in millions of cars, and it was born right here in Australia.

Doftek

Melbourne-based Doftek is shaking up vehicle suspension with its groundbreaking Active Wheel Alignment system and Wheel Alignment monitoring technology.

Doftek’s clever technology automatically adjusts wheel geometry on-the-fly to maximise handling performance, improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and minimise tyre wear.

Unlike conventional suspension systems, which have a fixed, static alignment, Doftek’s set up dynamically adapts to driving conditions, resulting in a smoother, safer, and more responsive ride.

Doftek is currently working with major manufacturers to test its systems on multiple prototype vehicles.

The Aussie start-up is pushing to have its groundbreaking wheel alignment system commercially adopted as a standard feature before 2027.

This article is part of the Back Australia series, which was supported by Australian Made Campaign, Harvey Norman, Westpac,Bunnings, Coles, TechnologyOne, REA Group, Cadbury, R.M.Williams, Qantas, Vodafone and BHP.
