BOURNE, MASS. (WHDH) – Crews responded to a deadly construction accident on County Road in Bourne on Friday.
Officials say around 8:26 a.m., officers responded to 1054 County Road for a workplace accident, reporting a man was pinned underneath construction equipment.
When they arrived, they performed CPR on the man but he was shortly pronounced dead after.
Police say the man is a 71-year-old from Bourne and was operating a piece of equipment in a cranberry bog when it rolled on top of him.
Authorities said the victim was operating a sand spreader and doing maintenance to help the cranberry crop grow during the offseason.
“When the tractor this gentleman was driving started to go down a ramp to get on the bog, it flipped over and he was trapped,” Rep. Steven Xiarhos said, Barnstable 5th District.
Representative Xiarhos rushed to the scene in his district and said other workers tried to help.
“His fellow workers who were with him did the best to get him out of there,” Xiarhos said.
The deputy fire chief said those workers did get to the driver.
“They were able to use another piece of equipment and make enough room where the person was able to be freed,” Deputy chief Shawn Silva of Bourne fire said.
Xiarhos said the owner of the bog is devastated.
“He’s very upset and struggling with the loss of his friend,” Xiarhos said. “They’ve worked together for over 30 years.”
OSHA, Bourne police, and Massachusetts state police are investigating the incident at this time.
