A woman who boarded a train in Edinburgh has told of her ‘disgust’ after opening the door of the ScotRail toilet. Francesca Cozzari, 35, was ‘sickened’ by the state of the loo after getting the 8pm train home on Saturday, November 22.

Francesca, from Drumgelloch in North Lanarkshire, had been enjoying a day out with her pals and boyfriend and was desperate to use the facilities. She was told the toilet on their carriage was out of service.

A conductor told her one was working on another carriage, reports the Daily Record. Francesca, who has a stoma bag – a waterproof medical pouch that collects bodily waste – was shocked by what she saw after sprinting to it.

Francesca said there was vomit in the sink, the toilet was filled up to the brim, the floor was a puddle of pee, and there were dirty nappies on the sink. She said the mess was “diabolical” and likened it to a “bin”.

She told the Record: “I opened up the door and – as someone who could not wait another second – I could not use the bathroom. It was disgusting. There was vomit in the sink, the toilet was up to the brim with all sorts of c***, the floor was one puddle of pee, there were dirty nappies on top of the sink.

“I was nearly crying.”

Francesca “bore the pain” and waited until she got home to use the toilet. She said the facilities on board the train were not fit for any type of passenger. Francesca said: “An elderly person, child or parent wouldn’t have been able to use it.

“I paid £30 for that 50-minute journey, but whether it’s a long or short journey, you should be able to use the facilities.”

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We’re sorry to hear about this customer’s experience.

“Our train maintenance and presentation teams work hard to make sure our trains are clean and that toilets are fully operational, so customers receive the standard of service they expect and deserve.

“We know how important accessible and hygienic toilets are to customers and we are sorry for the inconvenience caused on this occasion.”
