Wolves are one of three teams considering a move for six-goal Mali striker Lassine Sinayoko, according to a report.

The 26-year-old has continued to contribute for Auxerre in France since making the step-up from Ligue 2 two seasons ago and has caught the eye in January.

With attention turning towards building a squad for the future at Molineux as even faint hopes of Premier League survival dwindle, Sinayoko is the latest target.

Rob Edwards’ side are yet to complete any January business but are thought to be planning for next season with the potential departure of Jorgen Strand Larsen.

The Norway forward is attracting interest from clubs across the top flight and could still leave before the window closes.

Wolves fighting with Championship hopefuls

Transfer specialist Pete O’Rourke writes that Championship promotion contenders Coventry City and Middlesbrough are also looking at Sinayoko as a mid-season option.

He did only sign a new contract extension last week but that does not appear to have dampened the interest all three clubs monitoring him.

The Championship’s top two are only separated by three points with Frank Lampard’s Coventry slipping up in recent weeks. Boro are now breathing down their neck and likewise identified Sinayoko as a player to watch.

Wolves, who are preparing for life without Strand Larsen in 2026, be that sooner or later, have the advantage of currently being a Premier League outfit, albeit perhaps not for long.

Sinayoko – described as an ‘assist wizard’ has scored six Ligue 1 goals this season for struggling Auxerre, who only have 12 points from 19 games. They are joint bottom, only above Metz on goal difference and in a tight dog fight with Nantes to avoid the drop.

Their hopes of staying up were not helped by Sinayoko heading to the African Cup of Nations with Mali, where he scored three times.

Edwards needs more attacking quality

Sinayoko bagged in the first two games as Mali managed creditable draws with Zambia and eventual beaten finalists and hosts Morocco.

He then scored in the Last 16 penalties win over Tunisia only for winners Senegal to get the better of them 1-0 in the quarters.

Meanwhile, Wolves have been invigorated by Mateus Mane’s introduction into the side but they have been desperately short of service in attack.

Sinayoko has never been prolific, failing to score more than eight goals in a single league season since playing in the fifth division of French football even years ago.

But he is a regular contributor throughout the levels. This season he has six goals and two assists from 1,600 minutes and he ended last term five and nine from 34 appearances.

Time is running out at Molineux

Wolves have picked up slightly but know they need miracle to catch West Ham and Nottingham Forest. They host Bournemouth on Saturday in the last game before the February 2 transfer deadline.

Chelsea visit the Midlands five days after the window closes with a crucial clashes against Forest and Crystal Palace either side of the FA Cup fourth round tie with Grimsby Town.
