“Woke” Isn’t the Word I’d Associate with Liam Neeson, but the OG ‘Naked Gun’ Director Thinks So

Hollywood has had a long and storied love affair with relaunching franchises, but sometimes the original creators simply aren’t buying what the suits are selling. Enter David Zucker, the filmmaking genius behind classics like Airplane! and the original Naked Gun, who is not only skeptical of the upcoming Naked Gun reboot but is leading a full-on boycott. The reboot, directed by Akiva Schaffer and starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., is set to hit theaters on August 1, 2025, promising a fresh take for a new generation.

However, Zucker is not holding back. The creator is openly critical of the new film’s tone, casting choices, and production strategy, going as far as refusing to even watch the trailers. Behind the scenes, sugar-coated nostalgia and big-budget decisions clash with Zucker’s trademark brand of risk-taking, tightly-wound spoof comedy. His dissatisfaction runs deeper than fandom, being rooted in creative exclusion. Paramount dismissed his pitch for Naked: Impossible, a spy-movie spin on the franchise. Now, with Akiva Schaffer’s brainchild getting all the hype, Zucker is sharpening his quips. This blowback offers a dramatic collision between legacy and reinvention, and sets the stage for a classic Hollywood tête-à-tête where the old guard fights the modern revival.

David Zucker is not tiptoeing around his opinion, choosing instead to flat-out boycott the film. After decades of celebrating his own Naked Gun work, Zucker has taken a firm stand, refusing to watch a single second of footage. According to the creator, even being shown a teaser is a nonstarter, and he has no interest in preview materials. The uncharacteristic statement speaks volumes, indicating that Zucker does not want to dilute his creative brand by tacitly endorsing a vision he sees as inauthentic.

Veering away from keeping his boycott on passive grounds, Zucker has gone public via interviews with various news outlets to condemn the casting, and implicitly the logic, behind Liam Neeson replacing Leslie Nielsen. He is clear that a brief nod from Neeson’s camp does not grant artistic legitimacy. In an interview with Fox News, Zucker said:

“It’s painful, but it’s just not what I would have done. But you know, I don’t want to just bash what they’re doing, but I’d like to. But it’s not what I would have done, it is not our style. It’s strange seeing it.”

Zucker’s boycott amounts to much more than high-profile displeasure. It appears to be a strategic refusal to fuel hype. Zucker is not attempting to sabotage the film, but failing to even consider it a real Naked Gun. His refusal to press play on the trailer also signals the deeper implication that once you step away from the original creative team, you’re no longer making their film but simply someone else’s imitation.

Why Is David Zucker Spurning Neeson and Rejecting Reboots?

At the heart of the boycott is an artistic clash. Zucker believes that this reboot betrays the tone of The Naked Gun trilogy. He has been open about his disdain for the casting of Liam Neeson, arguing that one simply cannot replicate Leslie Nielsen’s deadpan magic. While Zucker admits that Neeson and the producers are individuals who love the originals, he still maintains that admiration alone does not equal authenticity.

Zucker has been steadfast in his opinion that Nielsen simply cannot be replaced. This signals a deep-rooted belief in comedic craft, and is not limited to a case of mere nostalgia. Zucker has also gone further, criticizing what he sees as a watered-down, politically safe version of spoof comedy and contending that the rules of spoof, including genre parody, pacing, and gag layering, have been lost. As reported by Film Threat, “comedy has become safe,” said Zucker. “Studios are afraid. They’re a frightened bunch.”

Longtime fans’ worries about Liam Neeson’s ‘Naked Gun’ reboot were eased after a recent teaser trailer.

In Schaffer and MacFarlane’s hands, Zucker sees an adaptation stripped of its satirical core. His proposed Naked: Impossible would have spoofed modern espionage blockbusters with the son of Frank Drebin, bringing freshness while honoring the absurdist spirit of the originals. However, with Hollywood opting for star power and safe scripts, Zucker’s vision was tabled.

Paramount’s Past Pitches Have Fueled David Zucker’s Backlash

Beyond aesthetic criticism, Zucker’s disillusion runs deep into the business decisions that sidelined him and apparently broke his trust. He and co-writer Pat Prot reportedly developed a fully-formed sequel script that Paramount initially green-lit. Their pitch featured an Andy Samberg-style protagonist spoofing Bond, Bourne, and MI5 tropes, amounting to a bold evolution of the franchise.

However, once Seth MacFarlane entered the picture, bringing star wattage, agency backing, and a modern comedic voice, Zucker’s team was abruptly replaced. He cites this shift to a bigger name, brand, and fresh approach as the death knell for his project. According to Zucker, this is an apt description of Hollywood, where sentimental fans are easily overridden by marketing stats and marquee names.

This shift has clearly amounted to artistic treachery for Zucker. He has claimed that neither producers nor creatives offered him a seat at the table, despite his track record and contributions. Even his offers to guide or produce were politely rebuffed. This result is a schism that is both personal and professional, where Zucker’s refusal to promote or associate with the reboot stems as much from disrespect as from creative disagreement.

As the reboot barrels towards its August 1 release date, David Zucker’s absence will loom like a missing punchline. Whether audiences embrace the new film or dismiss it as a hollow tribute, Zucker has already made his statement. Although he could have gone with the flow and embraced the fun difference of a reboot, the creator is taking things seriously and communicating that he prefers not to be an audience at the original team’s creative funeral. Zucker’s protest echoes extremely loudly, and only the release of the Naked Gun reboot will prove whether the film is actually Naked Gun or simply nostalgia in a Liam Neeson suit.

The Naked Gun reboot will be released in theaters on August 1, 2025.
