Wild weekend weather to blast WA with heatwave and gales

WA and Perth weather: Scorching 38 degree heatwave and tropical low set to bring wild autumn weatherAmy CavenderPerthNowWed, 4 March 2026 5:23PMCommentsCommentsEmail Amy Cavender

Just as West Aussies thought summer was easing, blistering heat and potential gales are set to hit this weekend.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Caroline Crow told PerthNow that the “low intensity heatwave conditions” are due to a high pressure system sitting in the Great Australian Bight, south of WA.

“There’s a high in the Bight directing north north easterly winds over the state into a West coast trough, and that pattern is staying fairly similar over the next few days so we’re continually getting that heat brought towards the west coast, which is bringing these hot to very hot temperatures over the Perth area,” she said.

While Ms Crow explained that WA has seen temperatures above 40 degrees in previous March’s, the 38 degree high forecast for Saturday, March 7 is well above average.

“We’re just outside of summer so you can still get those big hot temperatures in March, the average temperature for March is 29.7 degrees so these temperatures are above average for March,” she said.

While the Perth area will be affected by heat, the North West of WA is likely to be affected by a tropical low that could bring gales as it makes landfall.

“The tropical low may potentially become a tropical cyclone tonight and through Thursday, but by Friday it is expected to weaken again as it moves in that south westerly direction and then looks as if it’s going to move in a south easterly direction, so this system is not yet a cyclone and it looks like it’s going to weaken before it gets to the coast,” Ms Crow said.

“It may still have a small area of gales associated with it but at this point it’s not forecast to be a cyclone as it approaches that north west Kimberley coast.”
