Why the PN can win again

Every political party reaches a point when, through its decisions, it shapes its direction. The Nationalist Party has now chosen a new leader. Maltese political history has provided us with many defining moments. The PN today may well be approaching such a juncture.

Many say that Labour’s dominance is insurmountable and that the PN is condemned to the margins. But, by looking closer at the recent PN leadership renewal and the current political scenario, a PN victory is not only possible but is also within reach.

Of course, the PN’s path back to government will not be easy. It demands courage, reform, and a clear, compelling vision. Yet recent developments have created a ripe opportunity for change. If the PN approaches this prospect with clarity, boldness, and purpose, it can once again become the natural choice of the electorate.

For too long, the PN has been trapped within itself. Yet, a crisis can be the seed of opportunity. Despite significant challenges, Bernard Grech demonstrated perseverance and, with great humanity, succeeded in keeping the party united at a time when it was on the brink of collapse. Adrian Delia showed maturity, loyalty and perseverance and the Vitals case gave him justice.

The new PN leader is a person who reflects a new generation of energy and ideas. This is a sign of courage and renewal, not of doubt and division.

Building on this foundation, the PN has now turned to a new generation with the election of Borg, who, as the new PN leader, marks a bold step toward renewal. Borg’s youth, energy and determination have already struck a chord with many voters.

He has shown an ability to connect deeply with the electorate, embodying the drive and vision needed to reimagine the Malta and Gozo of tomorrow; not for the sake of partisan politics but for us all Maltese united as one nation.

Indeed, Borg has understood that we all stand at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history when great challenges can be transformed into great opportunities and where Malta’s dream is one which lies in unity. By joining together as one people, despite all our differences, we can build a better future for all. By setting aside tribal and partisan politics, we can work towards a common goal that will benefit us all, not merely a selected minority.

The continuity between Grech’s leadership and Borg’s energising presence is powerful. The former leader ensured survival, the latter is all for revival.

Labour’s long dominance is no longer unquestioned. In a society where the PL has sowed and bred a culture whereby individual interests undermine collective ones and impunity reigns supreme, many who once enthusiastically supported the PL are now questioning that style of governance.

There is no doubt that the government is lost in internal strife. If not, it would never hint at an early election. Robert Abela appears directionless, yet desperate to hold on to power for another five years.

Many may not yet have shifted to PN but they are open to persuasion, including a large bloc of non-voters who are a reflection of a collective disillusionment with both major parties. The PN needs to present itself as the credible alternative; not as a party in opposition but as a government in waiting. For, indeed, that moment is now or never.

The PN must do more than simply criticise the government – it must inspire. It needs a bold vision that embodies true leadership.

The electorate yearns for hope, and optimism must become the PN’s defining hallmark. The party must cultivate a collective dream of change and ensure that a politics rooted in boldness and courage – not just hope – endures.

I am already on record stating that the PN needs a serious rebranding exercise that takes today’s political realities into consideration. It must leave behind what belongs to the past and ensure that its media arm fully lives up to the essential political role for which it was originally established.

The party must shed individual egos and foster genuine acceptance, collegiality, discipline and respect for authority and administration. It needs a unified, corporate approach to managing its assets and liabilities, a cohesive shadow cabinet and a well-planned strategy behind every decision.

There should be fewer meaningless press releases and more substantive action, supported by effective, sectional committees that provide informed data.

The party must embrace the understanding that it serves one common and noble cause – representing a nation eager for an opposition that offers better prospects for Malta.

I, like many others, dream of a nation where every individual is fully empowered to reach their potential; where equality is indeed a reality and compassion and empathy guide decision-making; a nation with a sustainable and robust economy, where innovation and entrepreneurship flourish and prosperity is shared equitably by all; a place where education is accessible to everyone, healthcare is a right – not a privilege – and the environment is protected; a nation that encourages young people to realise their full potential, where their voices are heard and their ideas valued.

Politics is never static and Malta’s political landscape is shifting. Labour’s grip is no longer absolute.

The PN once again has the chance to inspire hope and provide direction through courageous leadership and a clear vision.

Decisive moments are rare but when they arise, they must be seized. This moment can be the answer as to why the PN can win again. A new nation awaits.
