Why the Fate of the Crypto Market Hangs on FED Rate Cuts

As the price of Bitcoin hovers around its mid-May all-time-high of around $119K and market capitalization heads towards $4 trillion, traders believe any FED rate cuts at the end of July hold the fate of the market.

According to crypto analyst Paul Barron on an X post that has since gone viral, a surprise FED cut rates at the end of July during the FOMC meeting could spark a Bitcoin rally despite the ongoing market skepticism.

FED rate cuts have traditionally led to rallies in all financial markets, including stocks, real estate, and cryptocurrencies. Analysts and traders believe that an unusually dense cluster of macro-policy events in the US could also intensify legal battles over US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Analyst Barron opines that a surprise Fed rate cuts has the potential to ignite a bullish wave across the market, where real estate could become a primary beneficiary. In his X post, the expert noted that historically, the S&P 500 performed well following such cuts. However, the impact may be more profound within the crypto space because lower rates could translate to benefits for risk assets.

Since December 2024, the Fed has kept interest rates between 4.25% and 4.50%. The second half of 2024 recorded a 1% rate reduction, leading to this approach. Since the beginning of 2025, Fed Chair Jerome Powell has adopted a “wait and see” approach and paused Fed cuts as a result of changing market conditions.

This is in addition to the need for the Federal Reserve to play its dual role of creating a balance between inflation and spurring economic growth and sustainable employment.

Another expert reading from the same page is John E. Deaton, who also opines that the Fed rate cuts by Jerome Powell could trigger a Bitcoin rally that could spread across the entire cryptocurrency market.

According to Deaton, there’s growing optimism within crypto circles that any rate cut will incentivize the next big rally within the cryptocurrency market. Commenting on the development, Tae Oh, the founder and CEO of blockchain platform Gluwa, which deals with real-world credit infrastructure, stated:

“With the Fed’s meeting slated for next week, all eyes will be on any shifts in interest rate guidance […] even the slightest hints of a pivot in policy could significantly impact risk assets – including crypto, which tends to react sharply to changes in the monetary environment.”

Apart from the anticipated Fed rate cuts, BTC is currently trading at a unique dispensation following the establishment of clear regulations for the crypto space. US President Donald Trump already signed into law the GENIUS Act, paving the way for stablecoin issuers to operate in a regulated environment within the United States. The House of Representatives also passed three other pro-crypto bills, including the CLARITY Act and the Anti-Central Bank Digital Currency Act (Anti-CBDC Act), giving experts the impetus to believe that a major Bitcoin rally is imminent.

The next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is scheduled for between 29 and 30 January 2025. The decisions made during this meeting will positively affect the monetary policy, including interest rates.

Any decision on interest rates typically has a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market. Lower interest rates have traditionally created bullish tendencies, as they encourage investment in riskier assets, such as cryptocurrencies.

According to analysts John Deaton and Paul Barron, lower interest rates could benefit Bitcoin and leading altcoins, such as ADA and XRP.

Fed Rate Cuts: A monetary policy tool where the U.S. Federal Reserve lowers interest rates, typically to encourage borrowing, investment, and economic growth.

FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee): The committee within the Federal Reserve responsible for setting interest rates and overseeing U.S. monetary policy.

Bitcoin Rally: A sharp, sustained increase in the price of Bitcoin, often triggered by market catalysts like interest rate changes or regulatory clarity.
