Cooper Flagg has a big fan in one of the NBA’s all-time greats.
A day before Flagg is likely selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, LeBron James offered some thoughts on the Duke superstar. According to James, Flagg should be set up to succeed fairly early in his NBA career.
Like Flagg, James was a can’t-miss prospect in his draft class. When James landed in Cleveland in 2003, he immediately became the Cavaliers’ top scorer. The Cavaliers didn’t find immediate postseason success with their addition of James.

“He has the benefit, unlike myself, he gets to join a team that’s established with Hall of Fame guys — Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving — right off the bat,” James said on his Mind the Game podcast with Steve Nash. “Hall of Fame coach, Jason Kidd. You know, these guys are like, they can give him the whole blueprint while he continues to learn what his blueprint will be.”

Flagg should fit well in the Mavericks’ lineup after the draft. He could get an opportunity to line up at multiple spots, especially with Irving still recovering from an ACL tear.
Flagg notably fielded questions from reporters Tuesday, reiterating that he’s embracing the process before he hears his name called.
“No matter what happens tomorrow night, for me it’s about being grateful and enjoying the moment,” Flagg said.
