Why Crypto Fits Perfectly Into Eli Manning’s Alter Ego, Chad Powers

Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights.

When Chad Powers debuted on Hulu in September 2025, it was marketed as a lighthearted football comedy spun from Eli Manning’s viral 2022 sketch. But beneath its humor, the series uses Bitcoin and crypto references as cultural shorthand, capturing the volatility, speculation, and modern hustle that define both the digital economy and today’s sports celebrity.

Co-created by Glen Powell and Michael Waldron, Chad Powers follows Russ Holliday, a disgraced former college quarterback who disguises himself, complete with prosthetics, wig, and the alias “Chad Powers,” to earn another shot at fame. The series blends sharp comedy with a deeper look at masculinity and reputation in today’s social media-driven culture, as stated by The Hollywood Reporter.

In Episode One, Awful Announcing noted that Russ is portrayed as “heavily invested in cryptocurrency,” part of a cluster of details, like driving a Cybertruck and referencing conspiracies, that telegraph his overconfident, hyper-online persona.

The writers use crypto not as exposition but as character shorthand signaling risk, ego, and the illusion of control.

In Episode Two, Russ sends a Bitcoin payment to a character named Dylan. The exchange is brief but symbolically rich. For a man gambling everything on a second chance, transferring Bitcoin becomes a fitting metaphor. It reflects the overarching view of the crypto world itself as flashy, overhyped, and always one scheme away from collapse.

Within this framework, Bitcoin becomes more than a background prop. It’s a narrative device. The volatility of crypto markets mirrors the instability of Russ’s life. Fortunes swing wildly, and redemption seems only one bet away. By giving its protagonist a taste for Bitcoin, the show taps into a broader cultural perception of the crypto industry as reckless and speculative. Yet that portrayal only captures part of the picture, overlooking the innovation and long-term vision that continue to define much of the space.

While the show leans into the stereotype of crypto as reckless and inflated, the real-world overlap between digital assets and sports tells a more balanced story. One where innovation, fan engagement, and financial empowerment are becoming more common. Across the National Football League, crypto and football have increasingly overlapped in real life.

The Dallas Cowboys signed a sponsorship deal with Blockchain.com in 2022, becoming the first NFL team to sign a major crypto partnership. Players such as Saquon Barkley, Trevor Lawrence, and Aaron Rodgers have promoted Bitcoin as a form of savings or salary diversification. By weaving Bitcoin into its script, Chad Powers blurs fiction and reality, echoing a sports world where digital wealth and athletic celebrity already intertwine.

At its heart, Chad Powers is about reinvention. A man remaking himself to reclaim relevance. Bitcoin, in its own way, represents reinvention as well.

That parallel gives the show’s crypto moments deeper meaning. When Russ says, “They sent the Bitcoin,” it lands as more than a punchline. It speaks to a new kind of trust built on code rather than institutions. In a world where money, fame, and identity are increasingly digital, Bitcoin stands out as a system where value is verified, not assumed.

For all its absurdity, Chad Powers captures a distinctly modern tension in 2025.

Success is no longer earned solely through talent, but through proof-of-work and transparency, qualities that mirror Bitcoin’s design. Crypto embodies that idea through an economy built on technology, innovation, and smart contracts.

Chad Powers may wear a fake mustache, but its crypto references are genuine and revealing. Beneath the humor is a question about authenticity.
