Brendon McCullum, the current head coach of England, is under tremendous criticism following the team’s unimpressive tour of Australia. In 11 days, the Ben Stokes-led team lost the Ashes, casting doubt on his tactics and the much-discussed “Bazball” approach. Former England bowler Monty Panesar identified Ravi Shastri as the best person to succeed McCullum as England’s coach amid the debate surrounding latter’s future.
After the team’s 0-4 Ashes loss in 2022, McCullum was hired by Rob Key, the men’s managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Together with skipper Ben Stokes, they revitalised England Test cricket by leading the team to 10 victories in their first 11 games.
But since then England’s performance has stagnated. They have lost 16 of their next 33 Tests, also failing to win any of their prestigious five-match series against Australia or India. They are currently behind 0-3 with two games left in the Ashes.

In an interview with journalist Ravi Bisht on his YouTube channel, Panesar expressed that Shastri would be the best person to coach England since he knows what it takes to defeat Australia at home. He said: “You have to think: who exactly knows how to beat Australia? How do you take advantage of Australia’s weaknesses, mentally, physically, and tactically? I think Ravi Shastri should become England’s next head coach.”
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India defeated Australia twice in their own backyard under Shastri. The first was in 2018-19 and the team repeated the feat in 2020-21.
McCullum emphasized that he wanted to stay in the position despite the outside clamor, but he acknowledged that after the Ashes loss, he had little influence over his destiny. The former captain of New Zealand has a contract with the ECB that expires at the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup and includes the next home Ashes series that year.

When asked if he believes he will be in charge for the home summer next year, McCullum told reporters in Melbourne, “I don’t know. It’s not really up to me, is it? I will just keep trying to do the job, try to learn the lessons that I haven’t quite got right here and make adjustments. Those questions are for someone else, not for me.”
McCullum described the position as a “pretty good gig” and stated that he is still driven in spite of the harsh criticism. “It’s a pretty good gig. It’s good fun. You travel the world with the lads and try to play some exciting cricket and try to achieve some things. For me, it’s a matter of trying to just get the very best out of the people and try to achieve what you can with them.
“Those other decisions are up to other people. I think we’ve made some progress from when I took over to where we are,” he was quoted as saying by the English media.
