Mateo Joseph has revealed the key role Mallorca boss Jagoba Arrasate played in convincing him to join the Spanish club. The forward left Leeds United last week, joining the La Liga club on a season-long loan deal.
Joseph informed Whites boss Daniel Farke of his desire to return to Spain to pursue a new challenge. He declined to travel to Sweden or Germany with the squad for pre-season preparation.
The Spanish Under-21 international was heavily linked with a move to Real Betis throughout the summer, but Mallorca swopped in late in the window to secure Joseph’s services. The move sees Joseph reunited with former boss Arrasate.
In an interview with Spanish outlet Cope relaid via Sport Witness, Joseph said: “The conversation with the coach was crucial for me. When someone is so clear and has so much confidence in you, you want to repay that confidence with hard work. That was a trigger.”
Joseph is in contention to make his Mallorca debut in their opening league fixture at home to Barcelona tomorrow night. When asked what he expects from the loan move, Joseph said: “This is going to take a lot of turns. We’ll see this year. Right now, I’m delighted here with the training ground, the city, the training, the people, who are incredible. We’ll see.”
He is relishing the prospect of competing for a starting spot with Kosovo international Vedat Muriqi. “There will be opportunities for everyone because it’s a long season,” he added.
“He’s a striker I admire, and we’ll probably get to play together because I think we complement each other well. I’ve been a striker almost my whole life, so I can help out on the wing. Whatever they ask me to do, I’ll do it and give it my all, that’s for sure.”
