The Western Cape Government’s revolutionary ‘Getting You to Work’ programme is making significant strides in connecting jobseekers to employment opportunities across the metropolitan area, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Launched in February 2024, this innovative initiative has rapidly evolved to assist more residents than ever before.
By enabling individuals to register directly for transport support via https://gettingyoutowork.westerncape.gov.za, the programme is dismantling traditional barriers to employment, primarily those associated with transport costs.
Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku recently underscored the critical importance of accessible transport in restoring dignity to jobseekers. ‘No one should be denied the opportunity to work simply because they cannot afford the transport cost to an interview,’ he asserted.
‘This programme is about levelling the playing field by ensuring that jobseekers can pursue employment opportunities regardless of their financial circumstances,’
Since its inception, the ‘Getting You to Work’ programme has registered over 20,000 beneficiaries, with more than 3,000 new jobseekers signing up for Gold Cards since January 2026 alone. Notably, areas with the highest participation include Nyanga, Khayelitsha, and Gugulethu, followed closely by Mitchells Plain and Blue Downs.
This distribution reveals a growing community reliant on this initiative to transcend employment barriers.
Highlighting the programme’s tangible impact, Minister Sileku remarked, ‘When we remove transport costs as a barrier, we give people a fair chance to change their lives. The success of the Getting You to Work programme shows how targeted, practical support can connect residents to opportunity and strengthen our economy,’

Reports of meaningful, life-changing experiences are amplifying the programme’s success; Ayanda Msizi, a beneficiary, shared, ‘Without the voucher, I would still be unemployed,’
Similarly, Anesipho Dumbisa reflected, ‘I wouldn’t have been able to travel to interviews without the voucher. The voucher helped a lot in getting me to interviews,’
Eligible jobseekers receive a free Gold Card, pre-loaded with six complimentary trips on Golden Arrow Bus Services, which can be utilised Monday to Friday during off-peak hours from 09:00 to 15:00.
