BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WDTV) – The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia is launching a tool that lets people learn more about who is policing their communities.
The new Police Accountability Dashboard is an interactive map that shows what departments police officers are certified to work in, where they previously worked, how long they worked there and their separation terms.
“All too often, police officers who end up fired or resign in lieu of termination end up continuing to work as police officers,” said ACLU-WV Investigative Reporter Kyle Vass. “People ought to have a right to know if an officer in their community has a problematic history. This tool empowers people in West Virginia with critical information about how, where, and by whom their communities are policed.”
The tool will show employment history, as well as cross-reference census data to display county-level data that is accessible and user-friendly, said officials.
Users will be able to explore the interactive map to see diversity indices, poverty rates and officer distribution in all 55 West Virginia counties.
The dashboard’s data is current as of September 24, 2025, according to officials.
“All across the country, police officers are given huge amounts of authority and very little oversight,” said ACLU-WV Executive Director Eli Baumwell. “West Virginia is no different. And we’re excited to be able to increase transparency in law enforcement by turning public records into a publicly accessible database.”
