Werder Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz has confirmed that his club has not been contacted by Leeds United about Romano Schmid, dismissing inaccurate speculation from the weekend.
Leeds have been admirers of Schmid and are thought to have touched base with his representatives before the Whites ceased their January interest in the attacking midfielder following the loan arrival of Facuno Buonanotte.
Leeds Live also understands that Buonanotte had been the club’s primary number 10 target and focus was directed on getting him through the door once it became apparent he was available. It seems the rumours may have been sparked by agent promotion.
Bremen chief Fritz has offered clarity on the situation this week too, telling German newspaper BILD: “No one has contacted us about Romano. We are currently not expecting a transfer in the winter and are planning with him for the rest of the season.”

Meanwhile, former Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev has revealed he was due to meet up with ex-teammate Schmid this week as part of a get-together with former colleagues.
During an interview with Sky Sport Germany, the midfielder explained: “I’m meeting up with a few of the guys today. I’m still in touch with Leo (Bittencourt), Romano (Schmid), and Amos (Pieper) from time to time. These are guys you stay in touch with – and will stay in touch with.”
Schmid – a 31-cap Austria international – has scored two goals and recorded five assists in 17 Bundesliga games this season. His contract runs until 2027 with reports from Germany suggesting that any renewal is unlikely to be green-lighted by the player.
