Wealthy Asian families and family offices are showing a growing appetite for cryptocurrency, making it a larger part of their investment portfolios. The move is being fuelled by record-breaking digital asset prices, easier access to trading platforms, and supportive rules in key markets, reported Reuters.
Wealth managers across the region say interest has shifted sharply. A few years ago, investors only wanted a small slice of crypto. Now, many see it as an essential part of a modern portfolio. Demand has risen for not just Bitcoin, but also funds, exchange-traded products, and advanced trading strategies.
Jason Huang, founder of Singapore-based NextGen Digital Venture, said his new crypto equity fund raised over $100 million in just a few months. “Our investors – mainly family offices and fintech entrepreneurs – see digital assets as an important diversifier,” he explained. His earlier fund returned 375% in less than two years before closing last year.
Global banks are also noticing the trend. UBS said some overseas Chinese family offices now plan to put around 5% of their portfolios into crypto. “Many second- and third-generation family members are taking active steps to understand and invest in virtual currencies,” noted Lu Zijie, head of wealth management at UBS China.
The growing interest comes as Bitcoin recently hit an all-time high of over $124,000. New rules, such as Hong Kong’s stablecoin legislation and the United States’ GENIUS Act, have further boosted confidence in the sector.
Crypto exchanges have been among the biggest winners. Hong Kong’s HashKey Exchange reported an 85% jump in registered users over the past year. In South Korea, trading volumes at major exchanges have climbed more than 17% so far in 2025, with daily activity rising by over 20%.
Experts believe the move reflects not just a hunt for high returns but also better risk control. Giselle Lai of Fidelity International said investors increasingly view Bitcoin as a hedge against global uncertainties due to its weak ties with stocks and bonds.
Singapore-based Revo Digital Family Office added that investors are becoming more sophisticated, moving from simple Bitcoin ETFs to directly holding tokens and exploring strategies like arbitrage.
As Saad Ahmed of crypto exchange Gemini put it: “The momentum has built because the asset class itself is maturing.”
