It’s incredible to think — 50 years. Half a century of laughter, learning, friendship and belonging. As WDSRA celebrates this milestone, I can’t help but reflect on what a remarkable journey it’s been.
Since 1976, the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) has been enriching lives, connecting communities and creating fun through inclusive recreation. For so many families, WDSRA has meant more than programs or events — it’s meant friendship, purpose and a true sense of community.
It all began in 1976, when the Glen Ellyn, Naperville, West Chicago, and Wheaton Park Districts came together with a simple but powerful vision: to make recreation accessible for everyone. The first programs — a summer day camp and a bowling program — were small beginnings that planted the seeds for something extraordinary.
Today, WDSRA offers more than 700 programs each year, reaching children, teens and adults across nine partner communities in DuPage County. As more districts joined — Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Roselle, Warrenville and Winfield — the reach and impact of WDSRA grew stronger and deeper.
Over the years, WDSRA has been recognized for its innovation and excellence. Twice honored with the Gold Medal for Excellence in Programming, and the first special recreation association in Illinois to achieve Distinguished Accredited Agency status, WDSRA continues to set the bar high.
But the real story isn’t in the awards — it’s in the people. It’s in the staff who give their all to create meaningful experiences. It’s in the parents who’ve watched their children grow and thrive. And it’s in the participants whose joy and enthusiasm remind us what inclusion truly looks like.
One of WDSRA’s biggest leaps forward came in 2005 with the creation of the Rec & Roll Adult Day Program, giving adults with disabilities a chance to stay active, build friendships, and continue learning. What started as a single program has now expanded to seven locations, each one filled with purpose, creativity and community.
And WDSRA hasn’t slowed down. From athletics and the arts to camps and social programs, the association continues to evolve and create new ways for people of all abilities to connect and belong.
As we head into 2026, WDSRA is planning a year-long celebration with special 50th anniversary programs, family events and community gatherings that honor five decades of inclusion and impact. There will be plenty of opportunities to share memories, reconnect and celebrate the incredible journey that has brought us here.
Fifty years is a milestone worth raising a glass to. So, here’s to the visionaries who started it all, the families and staff who carry it forward, and the countless lives that have been touched along the way.
Cheers to 50 years of inclusion, impact and inspiration — and to the bright future still ahead.
