One person died and three people were hospitalised following the blaze that left hundreds of people homeless in Nomzamo, in Strand. Another person died as a result of a fire in Klapmuts and at least 80 people were displaced in Gugulethu in another blaze. Spokesperson Sonica Lategan said that the City of Cape Town’s disaster risk management team is still conducting assessments following the devastation, while the South African Social Security Agency will provide continued relief and assistance to the affected. “The disaster risk management areas staff activated a mobile joint operations centre in Nomzamo. Initially assessments indicated that approximately 185 structures were destroyed.” Gift of the Givers spokesperson Ali Sablay said 2025 has been a busy year for the organisation where fires are concerned.
