MANILA, Philippines – July 7 is Katipunan Day, the very day that Andres Bonifacio and other Filipino revolutionaries and patriots founded the Katipunan to overthrow Spanish rule. There’s an upcoming film that frames this important piece of Philippine history from a feminist lens — Lakambini: Gregoria de Jesus.
Starring Lovi Poe, Paulo Avelino, Rocco Nacino, Gina Pareño, and Elora Españo, Lakambini: Gregoria de Jesus follows the life of the Mother of the Philippine Revolution, putting together narrative and documentary-style footage.
Multimedia reporter Juno Reyes sits down with historian and Lakambini resource expert Xiao Chua, creative producer Ellen Ongkeko Marfil, and lead marketing strategist Angel Romero to learn more about the significance of the meta docu-fiction film that took 10 years to produce.
