A wanted man arrested after wading through a stream was told the “officer is not scared of water”. The suspect ran off after being spotted in Leigh town centre today, Saturday, towards the Leeds Liverpool Canal before diverting through woodland.
But he was caught after he attempted to shake the officer off his tail by wading through a stream near Pennington Flash country park. After being arrested he initially gave a false name, but when one of the cops recognised him he offered his real information.
He was found to be wanted on suspicion of a number of offences, including being in breach of a suspended prison sentence.
The Manchester Evening News reported he remains in custody for questioning.
In a post on Facebook GMP Wigan said: “Whilst in the town centre a male caught the attention of one of our officers which ended up with a chase down the canal and into the woodlands.
“The male didn’t stop there and fancied his chances through the brook beside Pennington flash with a view to lose our officer.
“Little did he know the officer is not scared of water and followed him through the brook and caught up with him.”
An image released by the force showed a plain-clothed police officer putting the suspect into the back of a police carrier.
