The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied reports that it directed senior secondary students to offer specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, in a statement on Tuesday, distanced the council from the “unfounded assumption” on subject combinations circulating online.
“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” he said.
According to WAEC, curriculum development and regulation in Nigeria fall under the Federal Government’s purview, and the council only implements government policies through assessment.
Adeshina emphasised that introducing or modifying curricula is a Federal Government function, and WAEC operates within established legal and operational frameworks.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government.
“WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” he said.
WAEC assured stakeholders of its commitment to professionalism and excellence, ensuring fair assessment opportunities for all 2026 WASSCE candidates.
The council advised schools, stakeholders, and the public to disregard misleading reports and rely on official communications for accurate examination guidelines.
“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement added.
