Volunteer firefighters scrambled to put out a fire at the South Hedland landfill recently.
In a statement on Facebook, the Town of Port Hedland Facebook confirmed operations had returned to normal by Friday September 19, after the fire started three days earlier.
“The Town would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to our incredible local Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA firefighters, along with our dedicated landfill staff for their collaborative efforts in managing the South Hedland Landfill fire on Tuesday,” the post said.
“The Town received valuable advice from the team and have begun remediation efforts. While the fire is very much under control, it is still burning and producing some smoke. Operations are continuing as normal.”
Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, a fire at the same landfill site in April last year was sparked by lithium batteries that had been improperly disposed of.
At the time, the town said staff were attending to one fire per week on average at the landfill caused by incorrect disposal of lithium batteries.
