Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for transparency from major social media platforms on how algorithms rank content. He emphasized that users must understand what content is promoted, filtered, or suppressed and why.
He responded to a post from Ethereum Foundation AI lead Davide Crapis, who said platforms claiming to support free speech should make algorithm behaviour clear. Crapis argued that these systems should have visible, adjustable settings to promote accountability.
Buterin expanded the discussion by proposing the use of zero-knowledge proofs to verify algorithmic fairness without exposing private user data. He also recommended recording timestamps of content and engagement on-chain to prevent quiet censorship and manipulation.
In addition, he proposed that full algorithm code be published after a delay of one to two years to ensure public scrutiny. This would allow researchers and users to analyze decisions while giving platforms time to protect their proprietary systems.
According to Buterin, such delayed transparency would help rebuild public trust without exposing systems to real-time exploitation. He believes these tools could better align with the values of open communication and verifiable fairness.
Buterin also warned that free speech platforms could face backlash if misused for harassment or targeted online hate campaigns. He said abuse could eventually damage the idea of free speech itself, despite original intentions.
Looking at price, Ethereum has held above the $3,000 level after briefly dipping below $3,050 before recovering. Analysts say if support holds, ETH may retest $3,300 to $3,400, but a break below $3,000 could trigger a drop to $2,800.
