Vital harbour wall repairs delayed – again

VITAL repairs to parts of West Bay’s harbour walls have been delayed – again.

Earlier this year, Dorset Council completed temporary work to stabilise the crumbling harbour wall near the Harbour Master Office.

The first phase of the repairs, which took place in March 2024, involved installing 35 metres of steel sheet piling to prevent further deterioration.

These interim repairs were essential to protect the wall from further collapse and the council had said work on a permanent solution would begin this month.

However, these works have been delayed and will not begin until the new year at the earliest – with further works then planned for October 2026.

The latest news means that the repairs could not be completed until close to 2027 – despite the need for urgent repairs highlighted years ago.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said: “The first phase of repairs, completed ahead of schedule in March 2024, involved installing 35 metres of steel sheet piling to prevent further deterioration.

“The next phase of the work will continue in the new year, with repairs to wall A which is a supporting wall.

“Further work will commence in October 2026, when work will commence on the main harbour wall.

“This final phase will focus on long-term structural reinforcement, ensuring the harbour wall remains secure and resilient for years to come. Further details will be provided closer to the start date.”

The council has assured residents and visitors to the resort that access to local businesses ‘will not be affected’ during the repairs to wall A.

Shops, cafés, and other establishments in the area will remain open as usual, ‘ensuring minimal disruption’ to the community and tourism, the council said.

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s cabinet member for place services, said: “These repairs are vital to ensuring the long-term stability of West Bay Harbour, a key part of our coastal infrastructure.

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of local businesses and residents as we carry out these essential works. Our priority is to complete them efficiently while minimising disruption, and we are grateful for the continued support of the community.”
