Financial Sector Poised for Widespread Stablecoin Adoption in 2025
On June 18, Visa (NYSE: V) delivered a clear signal about the future of financial transactions, highlighting the rising importance of stablecoin integration within the global payments landscape. The company emphasized that stablecoins are quickly shifting from optional innovation to a strategic necessity for institutions engaged in moving money. Reinforcing this vision, Visa announced the expansion of its stablecoin settlement capabilities across Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (CEMEA), through a new partnership with pan-African fintech Yellow Card.
Godfrey Sullivan, Visa’s Senior Vice President and Head of Product and Solutions for CEMEA, emphasized the growing momentum, stating:
In 2025, we believe that every institution that moves money will need a stablecoin strategy.
Sullivan highlighted the rapid adoption of blockchain-based payments as a clear indicator that stablecoins are set to transform settlement infrastructure—making cross-border transactions faster, more cost-efficient, and available around the clock. Visa’s own stablecoin settlement solution, which enables select issuers and acquirers to process USD payments via blockchain, reflects this evolution. Since launching its pilot program in 2023, Visa has processed over $225 million in stablecoin volume, signaling a strong shift toward institutional acceptance.
Through its partnership with Yellow Card, Visa will explore stablecoin use cases across Yellow Card’s licensed markets in Africa, aiming to streamline treasury operations and enhance liquidity. The collaboration will also include testing integration with Visa Direct to broaden cross-border payment capabilities. Yellow Card CEO Chris Maurice commented:
Together with Visa, we’re building a bridge between traditional finance and the future of money movement.
“We’re excited to keep innovating solutions that redefine how money moves, making payments more secure, efficient, and transparent,” Maurice said. Supporters of stablecoins argue that despite ongoing regulatory uncertainty, these digital assets hold significant promise for expanding financial access, lowering costs, and improving efficiency—particularly in underserved markets.
