Vietnam is witnessing a remarkable surge in tourism as Can Tho and the Mekong Delta leverage administrative mergers, diverse cultural attractions, and innovative tour routes to attract millions of domestic and international visitors. By combining natural beauty, river-based experiences, traditional festivals, and local cuisine, the region is creating an all-encompassing travel ecosystem that fuels both economic growth and sustainable development.

Can Tho, Vietnam – The Mekong Delta is embracing a new era of tourism growth as administrative restructuring allows localities to leverage their natural and cultural assets more effectively. By strategically combining resources and expanding development spaces, cities across the delta are creating fresh momentum for the tourism sector.

The Mekong Delta Tourism Association reports a strong start to the year, with tourist arrivals surpassing 35 million in the first half, marking a 17.6 percent increase over the same period last year. International visitors contributed more than 2 million arrivals, while total tourism revenue soared to nearly 53.8 trillion VND, equivalent to 2.05 billion USD, reflecting a remarkable 54.5 percent year-on-year growth.

Government policies have played a pivotal role in this rebound. Resolution 82/NQ-CP, designed to accelerate tourism recovery and promote sustainable development, has provided a clear roadmap for local authorities and industry stakeholders. In response, regional tourism associations have collaborated with government offices to identify and recognise 29 new standout destinations, bringing the total to 63 notable attractions across the Mekong Delta.

Innovation in tour offerings has further energized the sector. Interprovincial experiences such as the “Four-Season Orchard Tour,” connecting Tien Giang, Vinh Long, and Can Tho, and the “Waterway and Handicraft Villages Journey,” linking Sa Dec, Long Xuyen, and Cai Rang, provide travelers with diverse and immersive options. These curated experiences combine local culture, culinary delights, and scenic landscapes, appealing to both domestic and international visitors.

The recent administrative integration of Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces with Can Tho city has created a dynamic tourism ecosystem. The merger strengthens Can Tho’s position as a central hub in the delta, offering a wide spectrum of experiences from beach tourism and riverine culture to floating markets, fruit orchards, traditional festivals, local cuisine, and craft villages. This consolidation has unlocked opportunities for joint promotion and cross-destination itineraries, making the region more attractive to travelers seeking comprehensive cultural and natural experiences.

To sustain this upward trend, the Can Tho Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism is rolling out targeted incentives for visitors and supporting travel businesses in developing innovative route linkages. Major cultural and tourism events are being organized to enrich visitor experiences and highlight the city’s unique identity. At the same time, authorities are focusing on leveraging the delta’s abundant natural resources to develop signature river-based ecotourism products that cater to environmentally conscious travelers.

Collaboration remains a cornerstone of the region’s strategy. The department is actively strengthening partnerships with neighboring provinces to position Can Tho as a regional tourism hub. These alliances aim to create integrated travel packages, improve connectivity, and facilitate knowledge sharing on sustainable tourism practices.

Looking ahead, the Mekong Delta Tourism Association has set an ambitious 12 percent growth target for 2025. The plan relies on strategic marketing campaigns, investments in infrastructure, upgrades to tourism services, and the adoption of digital technologies to enhance both operational efficiency and visitor engagement. Developing distinct tour routes that reflect the delta’s cultural heritage is also a key priority, ensuring that each journey offers a unique and memorable experience.

The ongoing coordination between government agencies, private enterprises, and tourism associations positions the Mekong Delta to strengthen its presence on both national and international tourism maps. By emphasizing cultural identity, natural beauty, and innovative travel experiences, the region is poised to emerge as a must-visit destination in Southeast Asia.

With the convergence of administrative resources, sustainable tourism policies, and creative local initiatives, Can Tho and its neighboring provinces are redefining the Mekong Delta’s tourism landscape. Visitors can now explore an increasingly diversified range of offerings, from bustling floating markets and serene orchards to traditional craft villages and riverside festivals, all within a well-connected, vibrant network that highlights the best of southern Vietnam.

Vietnam is experiencing a tourism boom as Can Tho and the Mekong Delta use new tours, cultural festivals, and river-based experiences to attract millions of visitors. This strategy combines natural beauty, local traditions, and innovative travel routes to drive growth and sustainable development.

As the delta continues to build on its strengths and develop new attractions, its reputation as a culturally rich and ecologically unique destination is set to rise. Travelers seeking an authentic Vietnamese experience now have unprecedented opportunities to explore this lively, interconnected region, where nature, heritage, and innovation come together to create unforgettable journeys.
