San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama is playing like a frontline MVP candidate to begin the 2025-26 NBA season, and he’s still only 21 years old. Wemby has the Spurs off to the first 5-0 start in franchise history, and he’s averaging 30.2 points, 14.6 rebounds and 4.8 blocks per game.
Everyone will point to Wemby’s 7-foot-5 frame, agility, or unbelievable skill set for his size as the reasons for his success, but not enough credit is given to his mentality, which is mature beyond his years.
Wembanyama’s mindset is often revealed in his answers to questions during interviews. On one such occasion recently, Wemby was asked if he ever gets worried about being dunked on, an experience that many players are embarrassed by, especially in this day and age, where a poster dunk can live on the internet forever.
Wembanyama, isn’t fazed, though.
“Until (the day) I’m getting dunked on more than I’m blocking shots, I’m going to keep going,” Wemby told reporters. “But none of us will live to that day.”
Now that Wemby is becoming a household name, anytime an opponent dunks near him, the internet will go wild — oftentimes in overreaction — and claim that Victor has become the victim of a poster.
Bam Adebayo’s dunk “over” Wemby on Thursday night was the most recent example.
The Adebayo dunk wasn’t really over Wembanyama at all, but the internet couldn’t resist trying to make it a viral thing.
Even when Wemby does get dunked on, though, it doesn’t sound like it bothers him much at all. He’s interested in blocking shots more than he cares about social media clout, and that’s one of the many reasons why the Spurs are lucky to have him.
