Jaipur: The rise of artificial intelligence and the challenges posed by deepfakes were among the key issues discussed at a day-long state-level police conference held at the Rajasthan Police Academy Friday. Speaking on the occasion, DIG (Cybercrime) Vikas Kumar Sharma said police must integrate AI tools into investigations while simultaneously preparing to counter emerging threats created by new technologies.Sharma said digital forensic systems capable of extracting metadata will be crucial for tackling deepfake-related crimes. He urged officers and the public to adopt basic digital hygiene, including two-step authentication and strong passwords, to ensure sensitive online information is not compromised.Sharma cautioned against cybercriminals increasingly using AI-based tools such as automated voice-generation systems to deceive victims. The same AI, he said, could be used constructively in policing through the use of facial recognition systems, automated alerts and evidence management.”Police in Bengaluru have begun a pilot project with automated helpline systems that has shown positive results,” he said, adding that AI agents could be deployed to flag suspects through CCTV feeds, and that blockchain technology could help maintain the integrity of digital evidence by preserving chains of custody.Acknowledging that emerging AI technologies bring their own challenges, including the need for advanced cybersecurity layers and protection against malicious large language models, he pointed to AI capabilities in pattern recognition that could help flag individuals most likely to engage in criminal activity.
