US military support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts not unusual — DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that the military support being provided by the United States government to Nigeria is not abnormal and does not compromise the country’s sovereignty.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Micheal Onoja, explained that the assistance — focused on training Nigerian troops and strengthening counter-terrorism operations — comes at no cost to the Federal Government.

“Our sovereignty is intact. Our territorial integrity is intact. Nobody is giving away our sovereignty,” he said.

On February 17, the DHQ confirmed the arrival of about 100 US military personnel and equipment, following bilateral engagements between Nigerian and American officials. Onoja urged the public to focus on the value of the partnership rather than the number of foreign personnel, noting that Nigerian officers also travel abroad for training.

He said the cooperation had already produced positive results in recent months and assured that military leadership, including theatre commanders, remained in control of security operations.

Onoja also addressed concerns about Operation Safe Corridor, Nigeria’s de-radicalisation and rehabilitation programme for surrendered insurgents, acknowledging that while it had recorded successes, challenges had emerged and the initiative was under review.

“We do not deny that there are challenges, and we also acknowledge that there is a need for a review,” he stated.

He emphasized that Boko Haram fighters remain Nigerians who must account for their actions but could be rehabilitated if possible.

On state-level peace initiatives, Onoja said governors have powers to adopt security measures but must align with federal directives through the Office of the National Security Adviser. He added that the Armed Forces remain committed to supporting Federal Government policies.

Finally, he urged the media to report security issues responsibly, warning that excessive coverage of terrorist activities could spread panic and serve insurgents’ interests.
