New opportunities have opened up for hands-on careers in the electricity industry in Crawley and Lewes.
UK Power Networks is offering apprenticeships in the Sussex towns as part of a national intake of 31 new recruits.
The three-year scheme for school or college leavers, and the two-year route for career changers, offer roles in cable jointing, overhead line work and substation fitting.
Charlie Aston, engineering trainee manager at UK Power Networks, said: “The start of a new year is the perfect time to pursue new career goals.
“Our apprenticeship programme gives recruits a golden opportunity to learn from experts, work in supportive teams and build a career with purpose.
“Like many of our field staff, I began my own career as an apprentice, and I’ve seen how our power apprenticeship programme opens doors to lifelong careers and opportunities.
“We look for team players who put safety first, pride themselves on quality work, and strive to provide the excellent customer service our communities depend on.
“They should also thrive on physical tasks, outdoor work in varied conditions and creative problem solving.”
Apprentices are paid while they learn and receive practical and classroom-based training in Kent and Suffolk.
They also spend a week in the Lake District on the Outward Bound programme, building teamwork, resilience and confidence.
The scheme leads to a Level 3 Power Networks Craftsperson Apprenticeship qualification.
On completion, successful candidates take on roles maintaining the electricity network for 20m people.
This work supports the UK’s transition to low-carbon electric transport and heating.
There are 14 foundation and 17 experienced apprenticeship positions available.
Six of these are with UK Power Networks Services, which is responsible for building and maintaining private electrical networks for sectors including aviation, rail and defence.
The deadline to apply is January 31, with more information available at ukpowernetworks.co.uk/careers.
Applicants must submit an online application and CV, complete assessments and interviews, and attend an in-person assessment centre.
The company’s apprenticeship programme was named Outstanding In-House Training Initiative at the 2025 Learning Excellence Awards.
It also received a Highly Commended at the East of England Regional Apprenticeship and Skills Awards.
