UK households warned to ‘never’ order one item from fish and chip shops – Daily Record

Brits are known to love a traditional ‘chippy’ take away with it being our national cuisine and a staple in much of the population’s diet. From fish suppers and mushy peas to crispy salt and vinegar covered fritters and battered sausages, what’s not to love?

However, households have been warned by one fish and chip shop worker that there is in fact one item you should never order. Jordan Luxford has shared some insight into what you should avoid in your takeaway order after working in a number of chippys along the south coast.

He advised: “I would never order a fried beef burger! If you want a decent burger get it from a shop with a hot plate to cook it on. He added: “If you want a freshly cooked item, go for something that isn’t in the glass top under the lights – but we would cook anything fresh if a customer asked anyway.

“Fried chocolate bars have always been popular, too.

“We would usually cook them for free alongside an order and as we wouldn’t have the chocolate bars in stock, the customer would be asked to bring them with them and we would cook them at the same time as the rest of their order.”

Jordan said: “The amount of preparation time needed to get everything ready before opening was a huge surprise!

“It takes hours to cut a Friday night’s fish and even more hours to peel, inspect and cut 20 bags of potatoes.

“Prep for a Friday night, opening at 5.30pm would start at 10am.”

Jordan’s revelation comes as a Lincolnshire fish and chip shop owner has confessed he is struggling to stay afloat due to the rising expense of ingredients, Birmingham Live reports.

Ian Stead, who runs Steels Corner House Restaurant in Cleethorpes, said suppliers had been increasing prices by 10% each month.

Mr Stead, who has run the shop for more than 20 years, hailed the situation as “the worst time for the industry”.

He explained: “We are not making any money and because of the cost of living crisis, we can’t put our prices up enough, because we know that our customers are struggling as well.

“We are not expecting to make a profit this year at all, it’s just a case of breaking even and getting through and hoping things improve in the future.”
