
In interviews with investigators, Agent Gonsalves said he was protecting himself from Villalobos.
“I’m on my back, on my side a little bit, just struggling, and I had my left arm up, defending my face, my head, my clavicle area, because the subject had both hands on my baton and was pressing it into my upper body,” stated Gonsalves after the shooting. “I was defending myself with my left hand when the subject rose off of me in what I can only assume was an effort to strike me about the head with my baton. Face, head, I’m not sure where, but he rose just enough for me to shrimp out, get to my sidearm and deliver one round to his torso as he rose to strike me in the face and/or head with my own baton.”
