Tunnel to Towers Honors Binghamton Hero

Firefighter John “JR” Gaudet was the kind of man who ran toward danger so others could find safety. He was a husband, a father of three, and a devoted public servant who gave over a decade of his life to the Binghamton Fire Department.

Earlier this year, while battling a fire in downtown Binghamton, Gaudet made the ultimate sacrifice. Now, in a powerful gesture of gratitude and compassion, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has stepped in to help carry the weight he can no longer bear.

Just in time for Independence Day, the Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Gaudet family’s home. It’s more than just a financial gift. It’s a promise that JR’s wife, Felly, and their three children, Charles, Vanessa, and Michael, can remain in the place they shared with the man who meant the world to them. The home they built memories in will stay theirs, no longer shadowed by the worry of how to make the next payment.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is delivering 25 mortgage free homes across the country this July 4th to honor first responders who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Through its Fallen First Responder Home Program, the Foundation supports families left behind, ensuring they are not also left without a home. These homes are meant to be places of healing, a way to honor sacrifice by providing some sense of stability in the face of devastating loss.

JR wasn’t just a firefighter. He was a son of Binghamton. He graduated from Binghamton High School, went on to attend Binghamton University and SUNY Cortland, and left his mark on the local lacrosse community as both a player and coach.

His legacy goes beyond the firehouse walls, it’s etched into the very fabric of the city he served. And that service was always backed by heart. He brought the same strength and integrity to his family life as he did to every emergency call.

“Firefighter John Gaudet lost his life battling a fire, confronting the danger and the risk head-on, with the same determination he had every day and working every call for help,” said Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is honored to ensure his family can stay in their home in the community he worked tirelessly to protect.”

If JR’s story moved you, and you’re wondering how to give back to heroes like him, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation offers a simple but powerful way to help. With just $11 a month, you can support their mission to provide mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen first responders and military heroes.
